CURRENT MOON
Dear Fellow Angler,

In the course of business I travel all over the Americas visiting new angling destinations and revisiting others. In March of 2007, I began to look around to buy a winter vacation house. After going through all of the memories, maps and the opinions of others I wound up buying a beach house on Playa Pelada in Nosara on Costa Rica’s Pacific Ocean side.

There are many reasons why I bought this house. The biggest is location. The house sits right on the very edge of the ocean. Second, Ecological Preservation: Nosara has 200 acres set aside for wildlife. No one can build more than two stories high. No one can build within 200 meters of the high tide line and the list goes on. It all adds up to one thing, no mass developments. Nosara is the Carmel of Costa Rica with all the Howler Monkeys, exotic birds, and other tropical critters to go with it.

The third reason is the fishing in the area. With no resorts around and little if any local fishermen, the water just outside your window are teaming with, Yellow fin-Tuna, Marlin, Sailfish, Rooster Fish, Grouper, Dorado, Wahoo and more.

After owning the place for a year I have finally put together a fantastic package for the angler who wants a beautiful beach front vacation for his family yet the 06:30 front door pick up to go off shore for the day and at a cost that has some of the lodges I represent fuming. They’ll get over it.

Offshore Action, Private Beach House Comfort, Great Price

Costa Rica’s Pacific coast has long enjoyed a sterling reputation for superb off shore and inshore fishing. This is by no accident. Just off the shore on the Pacific side the water gets real deep real fast. You do not have the three hour sprint to get to deep water for it is just outside the mooring where the lines go out. Because drop off there is a great abundance of bait fish that are stopped by the steep incline of the ocean floor topography. Right behind the bait fish, you guessed it, the big boys the Tuna. With the Tuna come the many Marin and there is a year round school of Sailfish. Throw in a catch and release policy, except tuna and you can see why Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast is one of the top 10 destinations for off shore action.

Nosara is a closely controlled community of expatriates from The US, Canada, and Europe. They have formed an association to protect the area from the kind of development that has ruined other communities up and down the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Here you will not find any buildings on the beach, just jungle, like it is supposed to be. The result is that the natural wildlife of the area live in close proximity with the monkeys, birds and a host of other exotic creatures. This is one of the few places in the world where the wild monkeys do not run from you.

If you are looking for the best in off shore angling, and a breach front house with your own private chef at a very reasonable all inclusive price this is it.

The Fishing at Offshore Nosara

Anglers are afforded several angling opportunities upon arriving in Nosara. First you will be picked up at the front door at 06:30 after a traditional Costa Rican breakfast and driven by your captain to the port of Garza, 10 minutes away. While in route he will go over the options for the day. When you arrive in Garza the mate will take everyone out to the Sol de Oro, a 25 foot center console, fully equip vessel well suited for the water outside the port of Garza.

Most likely you will stop off at the reef right outside the port and pick up some Yellow Tail Tuna using top water plugs. After catching enough Tuna for the whole town of Nosara you will throw out the teasers and troll for Marlin and Sailfish. Or if you want stay at the reef and try your luck at catching a big roosterfish. One is usually enough as they put up a tremendous fight. The boat is yours and so is the day. Just speck up and the crew will make it happen/

The Non Angler at Offshore Nosara

Nosara is the perfect place for non angler among the many options, lounging out by a beautiful swimming pool with a Jacuzzi, Take a tour of the Lagarta wildlife preserve. Go on the zip line tour through the mountains above Nosara, take a kayak tour of the Nosara River and there is always the Pacific Ocean right outside the gate with all the white sand in the world. You can surf and/or take a surfing lesson and there is horse back riding as well as a place to rent ATV so you can take off on your own or go on a guided tour with some others. Speak up and our agent will point you in the right direction.

The Weather at Offshore Nosara

The rains of September and October empty the area of people as many of the residents return to their native homes but everyone returns in November when the weather dries up. November and December are very consistent with sun in the day and a refreshing rain shower in the late afternoon. Beginning in January through to May the sun is out most of the day with some rain. June to September is much like November with plenty of sun and just enough rain to keep things green.
