Amazon Facts
- The Amazon River is so huge that only one day of its average discharge of fresh water at the ocean would be enough to fulfill the water requirements of NYC for 9 years. And we are not considering the wet season here!
- The Amazon River is 5 times bigger (in volume of water) than the second largest river on earth, the Zaire, and 12 times bigger than the Mississippi.
- The Rio Negro in some areas is almost 15 km wide, while the Amazon may be more than 50 km wide with an average depth of 40 to 50 meters.
- The Rio Negro in front of Manaus has a depth of about 100 meters. That's about 85 meters below sea level.
- The Amazon is the place on Earth with the biggest biodiversity. It occupies only 5 % of the Earth's surface, yet it holds more than 25% of all living species. This number will only grow a lot more as many new species are discovered every year. Scientists estimate that over 70% of the species of the Amazon remain unidentified.
- There are more plant species in a single hectare of the Amazon than in all of Europe.
- The diversity of tree species in the Amazon varies from 40 to 300 per hectare. In North America this number ranges from 4 to 25.
- In just one dead tree scientists found more than 80 ant species. That's twice the number of ant species found in all of the Britain islands.
- There are more fish species in the Amazon Basin than in all the Atlantic Ocean.
- The Amazon regulates the climate around the world.
- Scientists have recognized around 1,000 plant species with properties to fight or prevent cancer. Less than 5% of the known plant species have been studied in this way.
- 90% of the soil of the Amazon is extremely poor and not suitable for agriculture.
- Without the Amazon the world's temperature would increase a lot, completely flooding cities like NYC, Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo, Miami. And it would probably mean the end of human race altogether.
