The Satisfactions of Catching and/or Shooting Dinner

Soft-shell crab is a Top-5 food item in my book. Perfect seafood. Unfortunately, I don’t live on the coast where harvesting them would be plausible. Carolyn won’t likely allow me to maintain an aquarium suitable for raising molting blue crabs here on the mainland. I must rely on a seafood purveyor for these tasty crustaceans. Peck’s in Ozello has the best I’ve tasted in Florida. There’s a blue crab holding tank on the back patio. The scenic divinity of the… Re...

Thereís a Gator in My Pool! Nuisance Alligator Trapping Program Information

Nuisance alligator trapping has been in the news quite a bit lately with recent attacks in Florida. Increasingly, we hear about the Pool-Invading nuisance alligator. Or the At-My-Front-Door nuisance alligator. Of course, the Snatched-My-Yorkie nuisance alligator surfaces a couple times a year, too. FWC’s Nuisance Alligator Trapping Program has been underway since 1977 when it was confined to eleven counties. In 1978, 2,346 nuisance permits were issued and 1,871 gators harvested from 4,914 ...

Celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day on September 22, 2018

What’s my favorite holiday that allows me to dress up like a crazy person with no one caring That allows me to celebrate turkey, memories with family and friends, and the gratitude of living in this great country of freedom The one where seasonal items hit the shelves in late-Summer and early-Fall and compels me to spend an ungodly amount of money That’s right! National Hunting and Fishing Day!!! This year, National Hunting and Fishing Day is September 22nd. That… Read More ...

Thoughts about Venison Taco Nachos with a Sidebar on Datíl Hot Sauce

If my picky-eater daughter requests any dinner that doesn’t involve syrup, marshmallows, chocolate chips, or any other assortment of processed sugar-laden foods she readily acquires from her grandmothers, I clutch my chest out of shock. She’s ambivalent towards tacos in general, but venison taco nachos do it for her. So, this post isn’t so much how to make taco nachos – it doesn’t take schooling at …cole de Cuisine Alain Ducasse, for gosh sakes. No, the purpose is m...

Wood Duck and Teal Identification Video

The 2018 September Teal and Wood Duck seasons start September 22nd. From then until the 26th, both teal and woodies may be bagged. From the 27th until the 30th, it’s teal – blue-winged and green-winged – only. To help new hunters learn to identify these birds on the wing, FWC has released a wood duck and teal identification video on YouTube. In this video, biologist and waterfowl coordinator Jamie Feddersen talks with HuntFlorida TV host Tony Young about what Florida… Rea...

Fill Unused Alligator Tags Beginning September 12th

My favorite time to gator hunt is during the general phase which starts September 12th. This is when everyone with unused alligator tags can return to their designated waterbodies to fill them. Generally speaking, there’s less hunting pressure, the weather isn’t quite as gnarly, and some of the biggest gators killed are harvested this time of year. Personally, I’m still sitting on all four of my tags for these reasons. Overall, it appears folks are having a fine season. Check&#...
