Behold Arby’s Duck Sandwich

My home is 424 miles from the Arby’s in Summerville, SC. 459 miles from the Arby’s in Atlanta, GA. I’ve traveled much farther for waterfowl in my day; not sure I’ll make this expedition, though. Gotta hand it to Arby’s. Much like their elk sandwich last year, a duck sandwich is a creative idea for a fast food joint. And kudos to them for giving fellow waterfowlers some props. Nice to get some respect from the meat people. From Arby’s:… Read More » T...

The Swamp Buck

A five o’clock storm cooled off the evening hunt. Happy to be in the blind and not in a stand through that downpour, I followed the UF-LSU game on my phone. My buddy Nick texted to check in on the hunt. Hadn’t seen any deer yet, but they’d be moving shortly after the rain, I responded. The first weekend of October has always been lucky for me, when the bucks start chasing does in Manatee County. I heard a faint… Read More » The post The Swamp Buck appeared first on G...

South Florida Deer Research Project Quarterly Update July – September 2018

The South Florida Deer Research Project is in its final few months. After the data collection phase has ended, the final analysis will begin. These reports have been insightful on deer mortality. Panthers are the primary predators of deer in South Florida. Not a huge surprise to folks down there. Here’s the update from July – September 2018. Survival Monitoring • During this quarter, we investigated 2 female deer mortalities. • The mortalities were categorized as a panther predation ...

Alligators by Airboat

Gripping to life behind Captain Glen Grizzaffe as he whipped his airboat around Lake Kissimmee and Tiger Lake was like riding the back of a falcon as it chased prey. He’d pick up on the glowing red eyes in the headlamp, accelerate on the gator while readying the harpoon, a split-second decision to throw or not depending on the animal’s size. More often than not, he let the gator pass, banking away and hammering the gas towards another set of… Read More » The post Alligator...

Thoughts on an Early Hunting Season for Black-bellied Whistling Ducks

Black-bellied whistling ducks continue to thrive in Florida. They’ve proven themselves rather capable of adjusting and adapting to our diverse ecosystems over the last 20 years or so. They are found along the coasts. On golf courses. Retention ponds and drainage easements. Old phosphate ponds. Heck, they are practically lawn ornaments at Port Hatchineha. And there always seems to be a few lingering around during the early teal and wood duck season in September. Wasn’t always this way...

The Boy’s First Deer Hunt

As I settled the crosshairs on a North Carolina doe feeding in a cut soybean field last October, I heard Harrison whisper. “Dad…Dad!” Perched in a huge elevated box blind, his job was to keep an eye on the corn and sweet potato pile to our right. To the left, a herd of five freezer queens had wheeled into the field 30 minutes before dark, and we watched for a while hoping something with antlers would show. Harrison was getting… Read More » The post The Boy’s Fi...
